IG: the connection

Trader, Pro and Fleet plans.

IG is a CFD broker with a platform of its own. TakeJournal reads your IG CFD accounts through IG’s API with an API key you make in My IG and your IG login, at each sync. It only reads: it never sends, changes or cancels an order.

Make the key first: in My IG › Settings › API keys, Generate new key. IG makes keys for a live login; for your demo account, switch My IG to the demo account (top left) first and make the key there.

Then Connections → Add connection, type IG, a name, and:

  • Demo or live: where the key and the login belong. A demo key signs in to demo only.
  • API key: the key you made. It is stored encrypted.
  • User name and Password: your IG login of that environment. The password is stored encrypted and used for nothing but reading; it is deleted with the connection.

Add connection saves it and starts the first sync. Test login on the connection’s card lists the accounts IG shows for the login; a refused sign-in says so on the card, with what IG answered.

  • Every CFD account of the login, named by its name and number, in its currency, with its balance and open result as IG shows them at each sync.
  • Each deal that opened, closed or partly closed a position: a fill at its level, its size in the journal’s lots of the market (a CFD’s contracts times the market’s contract size). The first sync reads two years back, later syncs from a week before the last fill.
  • Deposits and withdrawals, funding (IG’s overnight interest), dividend adjustments, charges and currency exchanges, into the account’s ledger.
  • The markets as the journal’s forex, metal, index and other CFD contracts, named by the market: IG’s EUR/USD Mini → EURUSD, Germany 40 Cash (€1) → GERMANY40, Spot Gold → XAUUSD.
  • Each account’s open positions, compared with your fills, so a close the history left out is found (A missing close).
  • Spread bet and share dealing accounts: a spread bet is priced per point in the account’s money, and they are not read yet; only CFD accounts are.
  • Funding and charges on the trade itself: they show in the ledger, by the market’s name.
