OANDA: the connection
Trader, Pro and Fleet plans.
OANDA is a forex and CFD broker. TakeJournal reads your OANDA accounts through OANDA’s API with a personal access token you make in your OANDA profile, at each sync. It only reads: it never sends, changes or cancels an order.
OANDA opens its API to the accounts of every OANDA company except OANDA TMS Brokers (OANDA’s company for the EU) and OANDA Global Markets. An account there trades on MetaTrader 5: connect it through MetaTrader 4 and 5.
Add the connection
Section titled “Add the connection”Make the token first: in your OANDA profile, Manage API Access → Generate (in OANDA’s Hub: Tools → API → Generate), and copy it. A token is made either for your demo accounts (fxTrade Practice) or for your live ones (fxTrade), and reads only those.
Then Connections → Add connection, type OANDA, a name, and:
- Where the token was made: fxTrade Practice for demo accounts, fxTrade for live ones.
- Personal access token: the token you copied. It is stored encrypted and used for nothing but reading; it is deleted with the connection.
Add connection saves it and starts the first sync. Test login on the connection’s card lists the accounts the token sees; a refused token says so on the card, with what OANDA answered. A token made in the other place is refused too: make one where your accounts are, or switch Where the token was made.
What it reads
Section titled “What it reads”- Every account the token sees, named by its alias and number (
Primary (101-004-1234567-001)), in its currency, with its balance and open result as OANDA shows them at each sync. - Each fill of an order: a currency pair or a metal in lots of the journal’s size (100,000 units of EUR/USD are a lot, 100 ounces of gold), a CFD in OANDA’s units; at the price of the trades it opened or closed. The commission and the guaranteed stop’s fee are its costs.
- The financing (the swap): OANDA pays or charges an open trade’s financing every day; the journal adds it up and books it with the fill that closes the trade, so the trade’s result is whole when it closes. A fill that only reduces a trade carries the financing paid then.
- Deposits, withdrawals, transfers between your OANDA accounts, OANDA’s adjustments and the dividend adjustments of index CFDs, into the account’s ledger.
- The instruments as the journal’s forex, metal and CFD contracts, named as the imports name them (
EUR_USD→EURUSD,XAU_USD→XAUUSD,US30_USD→US30).
The first sync reads the whole history, a year at a time; later syncs read from a week before the last fill.
- Each account’s open positions, compared with your fills, so a close the history left out is found (A missing close).
What it leaves out
Section titled “What it leaves out”- The financing of a trade that is still open: it shows with the fill that closes the trade, so until then the balance OANDA shows differs from the journal’s by it.
- The spread: OANDA’s prices already include it, as in your account statement.
