Trading 212: the connection
Trader, Pro and Fleet plans.
Trading 212 makes API keys for its Invest and Stocks ISA accounts (not for CFD: that is Trading 212’s rule). TakeJournal reads the account through Trading 212’s API with the key and its secret at each sync, from its own server; nothing runs on your PC. It only reads: it never places, changes or cancels an order.
Add the connection
Section titled “Add the connection”Make the key first: in Trading 212, switch to the account you want to read (Practice or real money), then Settings › API (Beta) › Generate API key. Give it a name and tick Account data, History (orders, dividends, transactions) and Metadata; leave Orders – Execute off, as TakeJournal only reads. Trading 212 shows the key and its secret; the secret is shown once, so keep it.
Then Connections → Add connection, type Trading 212, a name, and:
- Practice or real money: where the key was made. A Practice key reads the Practice account only.
- API key and API secret: as Trading 212 showed them. Both are stored encrypted, used for nothing but reading and deleted with the connection.
Add connection saves it and starts the first sync. Test login on the connection’s card shows the account by its number; a refused key or a missing permission says so on the card.
What it reads
Section titled “What it reads”- The account by its number, in its currency.
- Each filled order as a fill at its price, with the fees and taxes Trading 212 charged on it (the currency conversion fee, stamp duty and others) as its commission in the account’s currency. A stock or an ETF is a contract in its own currency; a London price in pence counts in pounds.
- Deposits, withdrawals, fees, transfers and the interest on cash into the account’s ledger, and the dividends with their stock.
- The first sync reads the whole history, later ones from a week before the last read. Trading 212 answers 20 requests a minute on a history, so a long one takes a few minutes the first time.
What it leaves out
Section titled “What it leaves out”- Splits, shares moved in from another broker and the other corporate actions: add them to the account by hand if you need them.
- The CFD account: Trading 212 has no API for it. Its statement imports as any broker’s export.
